Most residency programmes ask you to trade something: physical presence, tax exposure, or years of waiting. The UAE Golden Visa asks for remarkably little once you qualify, which is why it has become the default second base for internationally mobile families. Here is what it actually delivers in 2026, and, just as importantly, what it does not.

Residency on your terms

  • Self-sponsored for 5 or 10 years, renewable. No employer, no local sponsor, no tie to a job you might leave.
  • No minimum stay. Standard UAE visas lapse after six months outside the country; Golden Visa holders are exempt. You can treat the UAE as a full-time home, an occasional base, or simply an option held in reserve.
  • Work, study and business freedom. Work for any employer, run your own business with 100% ownership onshore, or do neither.

Family, properly covered

The family provisions are among the most generous of any programme:

  • Spouse and children are sponsored under your visa, with materially more generous age treatment for older children than standard employment visas.
  • Parents can be sponsored for the duration of your visa.
  • Domestic staff can also be sponsored.
  • Continuity: if the main holder passes away, family members keep their residency until their permits expire, a protection standard visas lack.

One qualifying investment covers everyone; dependants add government fees, not capital. Details in our cost breakdown.

The financial environment

UAE residents pay no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax. Corporate tax runs at 9% on business profits above AED 375,000, VAT at 5%. For families coming from 40%+ marginal-rate jurisdictions, the arithmetic is dramatic, though it only works if your tax residence position is structured properly, which is exactly the trap we unpack in our guide to the Golden Visa and tax residency.

What the Golden Visa does not give you

  • It is not citizenship, and does not lead to one. UAE citizenship is granted only by exception. If a second passport is the long-term goal, the UAE pairs with, rather than replaces, programmes like Portugal’s, as we explore in our UAE vs Portugal comparison.
  • It is not automatic tax residency. The visa gives you the right to live in the UAE; tax residency depends on where you actually live and the rules of the countries you are leaving.

Who it suits best

The Golden Visa is at its best for business owners and professionals who want a zero-income-tax base with world-class infrastructure, families who want optionality without stay requirements, and investors who already hold or want UAE property. Qualifying routes span far beyond the AED 2 million investment these days, as our categories guide shows.
