Grenada sells the same core product as its neighbours, a strong Caribbean passport in a matter of months, but with two extras no other CBI programme offers: eligibility to apply for the US E-2 investor visa, and visa-free access to mainland China. Both are real, and both are routinely oversold. Here is the accurate version.

The investment options

  • National Transformation Fund: US$235,000, non-refundable, covering a family of up to four.
  • Approved real estate: from US$270,000 in government-approved projects, held for at least five years.

Due diligence, government and processing fees apply per applicant. Grenada also stands out for family scope, including provisions for parents and, with conditions, siblings. For clean files, four to six months is a realistic end-to-end timeline, among the fastest in the region.

The E-2 route to America, accurately

The E-2 treaty investor visa lets citizens of treaty countries live in the United States to build and run a genuine business. Grenada has held an E-2 treaty since 1989 and is the only Caribbean CBI state with one.

The honest caveats:

  • The three-year rule. Under the US AMIGOS Act (2022), citizens who acquired their nationality through investment must be domiciled in the treaty country for three years before applying for an E-2. Grenada citizenship is not a shortcut to a same-year US move.
  • It requires a real business. A substantial, active investment (in practice usually US$100,000+) that you develop and direct, and that supports your family. Passive investment does not qualify.
  • It is a non-immigrant visa. Indefinitely renewable while the business thrives, with spouse work authorisation, but not itself a green card.

Planned properly, over a realistic horizon, it remains a genuinely valuable route, especially for families who want US optionality without the EB-5 price tag.

The China dimension

Grenada holds a bilateral visa-waiver with mainland China allowing stays of up to 30 days, a rarity that makes the passport uniquely useful for entrepreneurs whose business spans both the US and China. Combined with the E-2 possibility, Grenada is functionally the most business-oriented passport in the region.

Everything else the passport does

Roughly 140+ destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, including the Schengen area and the UK. Citizenship is for life, heritable, with no residence requirement and full dual-citizenship tolerance. The European outlook, including ETIAS from late 2026, is covered in our travel access guide, and how Grenada stacks up against its four neighbours is in the five-programme comparison.

Who Grenada suits

Choose Grenada if the E-2 pathway or China access genuinely features in your plans, or if its family provisions and processing speed fit your situation. If neither applies, a neighbour may do the same job for less, which is exactly the kind of call we help clients make. The application process itself follows the regional pattern of deep due diligence and mandatory interviews, detailed in our process guide.
